As much as Republican critics would like to use the incident for partisan purposes, Reid’s blundering comments were made in the context of supporting an African-American candidate, not praising a segregationist one. — Bingo. Yes, it was a dumb thing to say, but it’s a far cry from Lott’s “wouldn’t it have been awesome of we had a segregationist as President?” Ruth Marcus: What was Sen. Harry Reid thinking? - RocNow.com

Fire - 01-04-2010 - photo by Will Yurman
Monday evening a fire destroyed a building on Main Street in Brockport. It was home to six women who are students at the State University of New York at Brockport, officials at the scene said. When I first got to the fire I concentrated on the building itself. Flames were still visible shooting out of the roof. But while not officially under control, the firefighters clearly had the fire contained. As I walked around the scene, with only the hint of daylight left in the sky, and the snow falling, I saw some of the fire fighters watching the fire. It was a strangely quiet and beautiful kind of moment in what was otherwise a messy, noisy, tragic place.
